How do expert psychotherapists refine their skills beyond experience alone? Deliberate practice is a structured, evidence-based training method with the aim to help therapists improve effectiveness through focused, effortful skill development. This experiential workshop is designed for licensed clinical psychologists who want to deepen their inner and interpersonal clinical capacities using deliberate practice. Participants will engage in three targeted practice sequences: (1) an inner skill to expand psychological capacity and reduce experiential avoidance, (2) an interpersonal skill for effectively addressing client resistance, and (3) an interpersonal skill for recognizing and repairing therapeutic ruptures.

Grounded in the therapist’s real-world challenges, each exercise involves high-repetition practice, immediate and personalized feedback (depending on group size), and skill refinement. The workshop concludes with guidance on developing a personalized deliberate practice plan for ongoing growth beyond the training.

Presented by: Joel Jin, Ph.D.

Dr. Joel Jin is a licensed clinical psychologist and an expert in deliberate practice for psychotherapy. He is an author of Deliberate Practice in Multicultural Therapy and the forthcoming second edition of Mastering the Inner Skills of Psychotherapy: A Deliberate Practice Manual. He has trained clinicians and graduate students in applying deliberate practice to improve therapeutic effectiveness. Dr. Jin specializes in personalizing clinical consultation for clinicians, and using experiential dynamic psychotherapies to alleviate centralized pain symptoms.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and implement at least one deliberate practice exercise to increase psychological capacity, such as managing emotional discomfort during therapy.
  2. Apply deliberate practice principles to improve their ability to recognize and respond to emotions in clients.
  3. Develop a personalized deliberate practice plan by selecting a clinical skill, defining measurable improvement criteria, and structuring feedback for continued growth.
