Workers’ Compensation: A Career Opportunity

This presentation will provide early career psychologists with an overview of the Washington state workers’ compensation system as an opportunity to engage in worker-centric care.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this presentation, learners will be able to: 
  1. Develop an introductory understanding of working with injured workers
  2. Describe a high level overview of the Washington state workers’ compensation system
  3. List some of the workers’ compensation laws and rules pertinent to mental healthcare
  4. Meet the Associate Medical Director for Psychology as well as develop an understanding of the values of Office of the Medical Director, the roles of the Associate Medical Directors, and the goals of the AMD for Psychology

Presented by: Jennifer Jutte, PhD, ABPP, MPH

Jennifer Jutte is the first Associate Medical Director for Psychology with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, having joined the Office of the Medical Director in January of 2024. Dr. Jutte earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Washington State University and completed a residency and post-doctoral fellowship in rehabilitation psychology and neuropsychology at the University of Washington / Harborview Medical Center. Dr. Jutte has been Assistant Professor and Attending Provider in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, specializing in critical illness / injury, ortho-spine, and chronic pain. While Dr. Jutte was at Hopkins, she achieved an early career research grant from the National Institutes of Health. She also has been Assistant Professor and Attending Provider at the University of Washington / Harborview Medical Center (Level 1 Trauma Center), specializing in critical illness / injury, including traumatic brain injury, and chronic pain. Dr. Jutte also created an independent rehabilitation psychology practice with a focus on psychological evaluation services, and working with critical illness / injury survivors across the continuum of care, with a focus on community re-integration including return to work. Dr. Jutte has published peer-reviewed articles; she has authored several book chapters; and she co-edited the first book on critical care psychology, published in 2022. Dr. Jutte is an active member of the American Psychological Association as well as her national organization (APA Division 22 – Rehabilitation Psychology), having served in several leadership and advocacy roles.
