Moving from Compliance to Connection: Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) Interventions for Parents of Autistic Children to Enhance Emotion Regulation

CE credits: 3

Time: 1:00 PM - 4:15 PM (PST)

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the common emotion regulation challenges for autistic individuals and the corresponding ACL oriented FAP strategies used to train parents to enhance regulation.
  2. Conceptualize a case using FAP principles with specific adaptations for parents of autistic (and other neurodivergent) children experiencing challenging behaviors.
  3. Utilize a neurodiversity affirming lens to critique compliance-based models of behavior modification as they relate to emotion regulation.

Program Description:
Join us for an empowering workshop that revolutionizes the way we approach emotion regulation (ER) challenges among autistic children and their parents. Together, we will discover the transformative potential of the Awareness Courage and Love (ACL) model in Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) as we guide you through a protocol specifically designed to enhance the emotional well-being of both parents and their autistic children.

With up to 80% of autistic children experiencing emotion dysregulation (including meltdowns, negative mood, and aggression), it's crucial to equip parents with effective tools for navigating this complex terrain. Our unique approach moves away from compliance-based methods and instead emphasizes the safety and connection of relationships to promote and reinforce ER. Through engaging discussions, experiential exercises, and real-life examples, you'll gain the skills to coach parents in fostering ER behaviors through awareness, courage, and love.

We will specifically explore the role of ER in both parents and autistic children, challenge common beliefs that hinder progress, and embrace a behavioral analytic approach that center the autistic community's lived experiences. We will delve into the nuances of supporting parents of nonspeaking/minimally speaking children, those with Autistic Pathological Demand Avoidance/Persistent Drive for Autonomy (PDA) profiles, and children who engage in masking or camouflaging.

This workshop is explicitly offered from a neurodiversity affirming paradigm. While tailored to parents of autistic children, this approach holds transdiagnostic potential, making it relevant to clinicians working with parents of children with other neurodivergences.

Understanding the Divorce Process

June 4th, 2024
12:00 PM- 1:00 PM Pacific Time
Register Here: https://opa.memberclicks.net/june4webinarregistration#!/

Workshop Description
Even though the divorce rate as decreased over the past 20 years (along with the marriage rate), about half of all first marriages end in divorce, with second and third marriages ending in divorce at an even higher percentage (67% of second marriages and 73% of third). As a result, there is still a growing need for mental health professionals to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the divorce process and its impact on individuals and families. The proposed presentation would cover the following key aspects:1) Legal Framework: Providing an overview of the legal procedures involved in divorce, including filing for divorce, property division, child custody, and support issues. This section would highlight the role of psychologists in assisting clients during legal proceedings.2) Alternatives to Litigation, including Collaborative Divorce and Mediation: Highlighting alternative dispute resolution methods, such as collaborative divorce and mediation, and their benefits in reducing conflict and promoting healthier outcomes for all parties involved. I will also discuss discernment mediation, which is used to help couples decide whether they want to stay together.3) Case Studies and Practical Tools: Sharing real-life case studies and providing practical tools, such as checklists and resources, to assist psychologists in supporting their clients effectively during divorce proceedings.

Presented by: Mark

Mark is an attorney with over 30 years of experience. He has been a prosecutor, an assistant attorney general, a civil litigator, general counsel, and a witness preparation expert. He has attained an AV Preeminent® Rating from Martindale-Hubbell, signifying the highest level of professional excellence. He was a Florida Super Lawyer from 2013 through 2021. His Avvo rating is a perfect 10. He is licensed to practice law in Oregon, Florida, and Georgia. Mark became a mediator to address what he sees as a growing problem with conflict resolution. Too many attorneys and judges lack the awareness to understand that problems which appear to be driven by money are really driven by emotions. Resolving conflicts requires a mediator to have empathy, to recognize the emotions driving the conflict, and to get the parties to acknowledge and address them. Mark’s Family and Divorce Mediation practice is focused on divorces, parenting plans, marriages, and other family disputes.

Closing the Transgender Gap: Moving from Fear and Lack of Knowledge to Compassionate Affirming Care.

CE credits: 3

Time: 9:00 AM - 12:15 PM PST

Learning Objectives:

  1. Have a basic foundation of knowledge about transgender individuals and their unique and specific challenges in therapy.
  2. Understand and think about ways to make their practice and clinical work affirming for transgender individuals.
  3. Have practical strategies for utilizing evidence-based therapeutic approaches in gender affirming ways.

Program Description:
Research has demonstrated a higher prevalence rate of mental health conditions transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. Additionally, current standards of care require a letter from a mental health professional in order to access gender affirming medical care. However, mental health providers often lack the knowledge and skills to provide transgender affirming services. This presentation aims to begin to close that competence gap by providing foundational knowledge about gender identity and the unique issues TGB clients may present in therapy. Connor will provide concrete strategies for providing clinical services in ways that affirm TGD clients as well as suggestions for utilizing existing evidence-based approaches in gender affirming ways.

About the Presenter, Connor Gallik, Ph.D.:

He completed his clinical internship at Pacific University’s Psychology and Comprehensive Health Clinic and went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical psychology at Seattle Children’s Hospital with an emphasis in DBT and inpatient care.
