Description:
The intent of this webinar is to ensure that psychologists are knowledgeable about how the 2016 Washington State Supreme Court decision in DeMeerleer v. Volk impacts their clinical practice now that the standard from Tarasoff is no longer in effect in Washington State. The workshop will provide psychologists with recently created decision-making guidelines specific to Washington State’s duty to warn/protect standards since 2016. It will also provide practical application options when assessing and managing risk of harm to others in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and clinical supervision. This presentation will apply to psychologists working with children, adults, and some special populations. Issues related to the impact of diversity on duty to warn/protect will be addressed as well.
About the Presenter:
Samantha Slaughter, Psy.D. is the Director of Professional Affairs (DPA) for WSPA. She served as a member of the Bree Collaborative's Risk of Violence to Others Workgroup. In her decade plus as a psychologist, she regularly works with clients managing risk of violence. Her experience also includes risk of violence assessment.
Tyson D. Bailey, Psy.D., ABPP is a board certified clinical psychologist who has performed threat of violence assessments in therapeutic, workplace, and forensic settings. In addition, he provides consultation on assessing risk of other- or self-directed violence.

- Participants will be able to describe the legal implications for psychologists of the Washington State Supreme Court’s 2016 Volk v. DeMeerLer decision.
- Participants will be able to explain the ethical problems arising for psychologists from the Washington State Supreme Court’s 2016 Volk v. DeMeerLer decision.
- Participants will be able to describe the guidance offered by the report released from the Bree Collaborative's Risk of Violence to Others Workgroup.
- Participants will be able to describe the risk factors and current research limitations for engaging in other-directed violence.
- Participants will be able to compare risk assessment measures and explain their limitations.
- Participants will be able to discuss the process for determining level of risk and follow up steps based on the Volk v. DeMeerLer decision.
