Event Description

Empirically-Supported Models for Emotion Transformation and Productive Emotional Processing
June 21, 2024
9:00AM- 12:15PM Pacific Time
In-Person Event

This workshop aims to give participants practical and nuanced understanding of emotions that can be readily applied in their conceptualizations and interventions with clients. For instance, according to emotion theory, emotions are considered fundamentally adaptive, yet not all types of emotions should be treated equally. Participants completing this workshop will learn about: different types of emotions, an empirically-supported trans-theoretical 'roadmap' for emotion transformation, and the components of in-session productive emotional processing. These models underpin the research and practice of Emotion-Focused Therapy, but can be integrated into other therapeutic modalities to address client issues such as: intellectualizing, interpersonal and relationship difficulties, traumatic memory reprocessing, healthy self-assertion, and more. Experiential exercises, discussions, and analysis of emotions portrayed in movies and television shows will support participants' engagement and understanding of the concepts. A goal of this workshop is for participants to leave with a greater understanding of how to differentially assess and conceptualize clients' in-session, moment-by-moment affective states.
